Stem Cell Therapy Los Angeles

By Steven Meier

Stem cell therapies are paving the way for more effective and minimally invasive treatments for many orthopedic conditions and injuries, and as a treatment for chronic joint pain. Dr. Meier and his team at Meier Orthopedic Sports Medicine use stem cell therapy and regenerative medicine to treat sports injuries and orthopedic conditions in a broad range of patients, from professional and recreational athletes and highly active individuals to senior citizens and people suffering from workplace injuries.

knee pain treatmentWhile exciting discoveries are made virtually every day for new applications for stem cells in medical treatment, this therapy has been in use in orthopedic medicine for some time. Pioneering orthopedic surgeon and regenerative medicine expert Dr. Steven Meier has been at the forefront of making the groundbreaking treatments available to all patients.

Meier Orthopedic Sports Medicine in Beverly Hills is bridging the gap between research and practical applications in the real world for regenerative medicine in orthopedics. Stem cells have been gaining more momentum in sports medicine and orthopedics in recent years for the promising signs of the potential to help advance healing after surgery and as a treatment for injuries that may not respond to earlier forms of treatment.

What are Stem Cells?

Stem cells are undifferentiated cells, meaning they have the ability to develop into many different types of specific cells and tissue, such as skin or muscle, through a process known as differentiation., The cells divide to form the cells that perform very specific functions in the body, including which include bone, heart muscle, brain, and blood cells.

There are both embryonic and somatic (adult) stem cells. In regenerative medicine, they can be used to replace diseased cells and tissue with new healthy tissue and cartilage. Additionally, more research into how the cells develop into other types of tissue can help researchers understand more about how the disease develops and progresses in the body.

At Meier Orthopedic Sports and Regenerative Medicine, we provide stem cell therapy to patients through the use of mesenchymal stem cells, amniotic stem cells, and adipose stem cells, each of which can be used for numerous orthopedic conditions. Through our experienced regenerative medicine care, the right stem cell treatments can be determined by your unique needs and health goals. stemcells.nih.gov has more information on stem cell therapy for treatment.

Different Types of Stem Cells

Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs)

With the ability to develop into connective tissue, mesenchymal stem cells have been in use in medicine for over a decade, and are at the forefront of regenerative medicine applications for orthopedic conditions. MSCs can differentiate into bone, tendons, muscle, cartilage, and fat (adipose) tissue. Found primarily in bone marrow and skeletal tissue, mesenchymal stem cells have the ability to self-renew (regenerate). For people suffering from a degenerative joint disease like osteoarthritis, or the effects of a traumatic injury where irreversible loss of cartilage can lead to chronic pain and permanent joint damage, MSCs can be used to help restore the lost cartilage and prevent further damage to the joint.

Amniotic Stem Cells

Made up of a mixture of amniotic fluid and membrane, amniotic stem cells can differentiate into skin, muscle, cartilage, cardiac tissue, nerves, and bone. Through a process called amniocentesis, the cells can be safely extracted from the amniotic fluid for use in medical applications. Amniotic fluid also contains a large quantity of the mesenchymal type, and research is currently underway to further understand and develop how they may be used for successful organ and tissue regeneration.

Fat (Adipose) Stem Cells

Like the other categories of stem cells, these are derived from the fat tissue in the human body and have the potential to differentiate into different types of cells which can be used to help repair or replace damaged and unhealthy tissue. This type is especially promising because unlike mesenchymal and amniotic stem cells, which are derived from bone marrow and amniotic fluid and membrane, stem cells extracted from fat tissue can be extracted through procedures like liposuction, which has the added benefit of being a much simpler medical procedure.
