Beverly Hills Ligament Reconstruction Rehabilitation

By Steven Meier

Ligaments are the tough fibrous tissue that helps to stabilize the joints in the knee and hold the tibia and femur together. There are four primary ligaments in the knee. These ligaments are:

  • Medial collateral ligament (MCL)
  • Lateral collateral ligament (LCL)
  • Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL)
  • Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)

Injuries to the ligaments in the knee are common due to the amount of weight the knee is forced to bear. One of the most frequently injured of these ligaments is the anterior cruciate ligament, also known as the ACL.

What Causes ACL Injuries?

A number of factors can cause or contribute to injuries of the ACL. Chief among these are sudden changes of direction, quick stops, awkward landings, and direct blows to the knee.

Beverly Hills Ligament Reconstruction Rehabilitation

Most patients who suffer from a torn anterior cruciate ligament will have to undergo surgery to reconstruct this ligament. Because the ligament cannot heal on its own, the surgery uses a graft to replace the ligament. There are two types of possible grafts. These are called autografts and allografts. Autografts are grafts that come from the patient’s own tissue. Allografts are grafts that come from a donor.

After ligament reconstruction surgery, patients will undergo rehabilitation. Rehabilitation will begin with the patient wearing a brace and using crutches for several weeks after the procedure. During this time it is important for most patients to continue to bend the knee so that the joint remains flexible. In the following weeks and months patients may need to undergo physical therapy to help with rehabilitation.
