Los Angeles Shoulder Surgery Recovery

By Steven Meier

Recovering from shoulder surgery is a multi-step process and will vary from patient to patient depending on many factors, including the type of injury, the procedure used to perform the surgery, and the patient’s overall general health and fitness levels. Once an orthopedic surgeon has diagnosed an injury and determined that surgery is the best course of action to repair the damage, patients will begin a course of physical therapy almost immediately to rehabilitate the shoulder with a series of range of motion, stretching, and strength and conditioning exercises.. The shoulder may also be kept immobilized in a sling for some time immediately after the surgery to keep the arm stable outside of the guided movements prescribed by the physical therapist to avoid causing further injury to the shoulder joint as it heals.

Los Angeles Shoulder Surgery Recovery

Dr. Steven Meier is an orthopedic specialist who provides Los Angeles shoulder surgery recovery to his patients after procedures to repair or reconstruct torn ligaments, tendons, and cartilage in the shoulder joint that can lead to pain and impaired and limited movement of the arm.

For candidates of arthroscopic surgery, a less invasive procedure than traditional open shoulder surgery, the patient will also be place under general anesthesia, but the surgeon will only need to make several small incisions around the shoulder joint to insert an arthroscope. The arthroscope has a small camera and light at the end that allows the surgeon to see into the shoulder joint through the images projected on a video screen and make the necessary repairs. Recovery time is generally believed to be shorter and sometimes less painful with arthroscopic procedures and involve less blood loss than with traditional open surgery. After surgery, patients will undergo physical therapy to rehabilitate the shoulder.
