What Is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy?

Tiger Woods, Rafael Nadal, and Kobe Bryant are all premier athletes in their sports, and it has been reported that all three have used platelet-rich plasma therapy to help them recover faster from their injuries.

While platelet-rich plasma therapy may have once only been used by elite athletes to aid in the healing process for certain injuries, it is now available to a broader spectrum of patients. At MOSM we bring the latest and most innovative biological enhancement techniques to our patients. These include not just platelet-rich plasma therapy, but also other types of injection therapy – such as hyaluronic acid joint injections – as well as a variety of the best and most advanced oral supplements.

To learn more about platelet-rich plasma therapy or any of the other biological treatment enhancements we offer, please contact Meier Orthopedic Sports Medicine today at (310) 777-7845!

How Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy Works

Platelet-rich plasma therapy entails using the natural components of blood in a targeted fashion in order to accelerate healing. The injections use a person’s own blood that contains a significantly higher proportion of platelets. To do this, blood is first drawn from the patient. The platelets are then separated from the blood using a special machine until their concentration is optimized and enhanced for the procedure. This concentration is then reintroduced to the site of the injury, helping the natural healing process in the area proceed more quickly.

Although the therapy has been shown to enhance the healing process for some injuries, for other injuries it has not shown to have any benefit. This is a reason why injuries must be evaluated carefully to determine which of them have a chance to be helped by this therapy. Platelet-rich plasma therapy can be used for a number of different injuries, but the ones in which the most benefit has been demonstrated are certain tendon, ligament, and muscle injuries.

Platelet-rich plasma therapy can also be used during surgery to assist in the healing of damaged tissue. It is particularly common to use it intraoperatively in the surgical treatment of anterior cruciate ligament tears.

The Advantages of Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy

At Meier Orthopedic Sports Medicine we are often asked about what the advantages are of platelet-rich plasma therapy for joint damage. Some studies have shown that platelet-rich plasma injections may help improve joint function and decrease the pain in areas such as knees, hips, shoulders, elbows, and wrists. There is also some evidence that platelet-rich plasma therapy can help with osteoarthritis pain.

Another advantage of platelet-rich plasma therapy, because the injections come from the patient’s own blood, is the low risk of a transmissible infection or other biological treatment side effects such as allergic reactions or tissue rejection.

The therapy comes from the patient’s own body, and it is designed to assist the natural healing processes after injury.
