Milwaukee Bucks Coach Jason Kidd to Undergo Hip Surgery
Beverly Hills orthopedic surgeon and regenerative medicine expert Dr. Steven Meier comments on Kidd’s injury, surgery, and long term recovery outlook
NBA team the Milwaukee Bucks have announced that their head coach Jason Kidd will be out of the game for an undetermined amount of time in order to undergo surgery to relieve chronic pain from an old injury to his right hip. Although the length of his recovery period remains unclear, reports from the team indicate that their coach is expected to make a full recovery. Kidd, himself a former player with the Dallas Mavericks, suffered the initial injury while playing several years ago.
“Chronic pain is a classic by-product of longstanding hip injuries like the one Kidd reportedly sustained during his active years as a player with the Dallas Mavericks,” said Dr. Steven Meier, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who also specializes in arthroscopic hip surgery in Los Angeles.
Depending on the patient and extent of damage to the hip joint, minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery is often used with great success, and has many advantages over traditional “open” surgery, such as faster recovery times and less side effects.
Arthroscopic hip surgery is often used to treat:
- labral tears
- “loose bodies”
- cartilage tears and injury
- acetabular impingement
- bone spurs
- snapping hip syndrome
“Treatment for hip injuries typically depends on the extent of the trauma, and whether it responds to conservative treatments over time. Surgery is one option to treat chronic hip pain and any resulting joint problems. More and more, we’re also seeing success with regenerative medicine treatments for orthopedic conditions, specifically with mesenchymal stem cell treatments for hip pain and injuries,” added Dr. Meier.
